Police-Rescue Dictionary Project

The web-based Police-Rescue Dictionary is a joint project of the language centres of the Estonian Public Service Academy (the Sisekaitseakadeemia)and Latvian Police Academy and will run from January 2006 to December 2007.

The aim of the project is to create an on-line dictionary resource for police and rescue service students at the academies which will help them to understand the key words for a number of topic areas such as Police Equipment and Training, Forensics and the Criminal Justice System.

Students are able to access the dictionary on-line and seach for words and topic lists. They have the choice of having the search results in English or English and Estonian or English and Latvian.

The teachers at the two language centres have examined small corpora of police texts to identify which words are the most important for students to learn in different topic areas and these words are presented in the dictionary with pictures and sound when appropriate.

The dictionary is a long-term work in progress. The current target is to have 800-1000 key words with equivalents in all three languages by December 2007. You can visit the dictionary at the link on the left - we would really appreciate your comments and any suggestions you might have.
